Championship near for PSV after win over Heracles

domingo, 6 de abril de 2008

EINDHOVEN, Apr 6 (SW) - PSV Eindhoven are another step closer to winning their fourth consecutive Dutch championship, having beaten Heracles Almelo 2-0 on Sunday.
A powerful distance shot from Belgian captain Timmy Simons put PSV ahead in the 12th minute and Peruvian striker Jefferson Farfᮠdecided the game at ten minutes from the end.

The win would have secured the championship for PSV, had Ajax not won their home match over De Graafschap.

But three goals from Klaas Jan Huntelaar and one from Kenneth Perez left the visiting side, who did score through Tarvaj䲶i, without a chance.

With only two matches to go in the Eredivisie, PSV have a five-points lead over Ajax. Third-placed NAC Breda are now out of the title race, despite an away win at FC Groningen.

That win will be celebrated however, as NAC's chances of participating in the Champions League play-offs have increased significantly. The 1-2 win was earned by goals from Ammi and Amoah, while Lovr頳cored the only goal for Groningen.

Feyenoord did what they were supposed to do and continue to share the fifth place with Heerenveen, albeit with a worse goal record.

The Rotterdam-based side beat FC Utrecht 3-1 thanks to goals from Bruins, Landzaat and Sahin. George did something back for Utrecht but it was too late.

AZ Alkmaar just barely managed to take three points from their game at VVV in Venlo. A goal from Ari and two from El Hamdaoui were enough to secure a 2-3 win.

All matches began with a minute of silence due to the passing away of Dutch FA (KNVB) president Jeu Sprengers. The former UEFA treasurer died at the age of 69.
