Evert, Navratilova: Team sports makes tennis in US suffer

segunda-feira, 21 de abril de 2008

It is a dubious distinction for the United States in a sport loved by tens of millions worldwide. There are only three Americans ranked among the top 50 women tennis players in the world.

One of them, Serena Williams, notched her 31st career title on Sunday, winning the $1.3 million Family Circle Cup, defeating Russian Vera Zvonareva 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. It was Williams' third tournament title of the year.

Besides Williams, the only Americans in the Top 50 are her sister, Venus, and Lindsay Davenport.

Why aren't there more Americans among the world's elite?

It's partly due to the allure of team sports and more choices for girls, say tennis legends Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova.

"We didn't have players from Croatia when we were playing. We didn't have players from China or any of these countries," said Evert as she sat beside her friend and former tennis rival during a news conference at the Family Circle Cup.

"Tennis is the No. 1 sport in a lot of these countries. There was only tennis, golf and figure skating when we played in America," Evert said.

But now girls can choose from everything from soccer and lacrosse to basketball and softball. "I see the kids feel more comfortable playing a team sport. You have that camaraderie. It's not all that pressure," Evert said.

"So much easier," Navratilova said.

"I just feel like our good athletes are going to other sports, which is great. That means girls have more choices," Evert said.

The two tennis stars, who between them hold 12 Family Circle titles, were back last week for the 35th anniversary of the tournament.

The two, who faced each other in 80 matches - Navratilova holds a 43-37 edge - agreed there is no other time they would have wanted to play.

"I wouldn't have traded being in the '70s and '80s for anything because there was much more camaraderie and much less pressure," Evert said.

"I wouldn't pick a different time period at all," agreed Navratilova. "We were still playing when Billie Jean (King) and Margaret Court and Virginia Wade were still playing at their peak. Then we went through to the next generation of Steffi Graf and Monica Seles."

Evert, who runs a tennis academy, said it may be a few more years before another young American superstar surfaces.

"In the 16s and 18s, I don't see anybody in American tennis," she said. "But I do see some potential in the 12s and 14s ... and I see No. 1s in the world in the 12-and-unders. It's probably going to be another five or six years before we see any."

Henry in doubt for Champions League clash with Man Utd

Barcelona forward Thierry Henry is doubtful for the first leg of their Champions League semi-final at home to Manchester United on Wednesday as he is suffering from a fever.

The France international, who sat as an unused substitute during the club's 0-0 draw with Espanyol over the weekend, was absent from Monday's closed-door training session due to the illness, Barcelona said in a statement.

Also missing was defender Oleguer Presas who has been sidelined for over a month with a fracture in his left hand but doctors gave him the green light for the match against Manchester United, the statement added.

Barcelona captain Carles Puyol will be absent from the match but in his case it is due to suspension. He is serving a one-match ban after being booked in both legs of the quarter-final with German side Schalke 04.

The winners of the semi-final tie will face either Chelsea or Liverpool in the final in Moscow on May 21.

South Africa football coach Parreira resigns

Brazilian Carlos Alberto Parreira announced his resignation on Monday as coach of 2010 World Cup hosts South Africa.

World Cup-winning coach Parreira, who served 15 months of a three-and-a-half-year contract aimed at transforming the struggling national team, quit because his Brazil-based wife is ill after recent major surgery.

Parreira sent a letter of resignation to South Africa Football Association (SAFA) president Molefi Oliphant before they addressed the media after an emergency meeting of the national governing body.

A weekend Johannesburg newspaper report quoted an unnamed SAFA official saying Leila Parreira was battling cancer and not even iconic former president Nelson Mandela could talk the coach out of leaving.

Leila Parreira told Brazilian newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo last Friday that the coach would return home next month to assist her recovery from major surgery and be with his grandchildren.

The 65-year-old coach guided Brazil to their fourth world title in 1994 and opted to quit a month after being lauded when South Africa gave their finest display for years to outclass Paraguay 3-0 in a Pretoria friendly.

It was the first time in 10 attempts that Bafana Bafana (The Boys) defeated South American opposition since being readmitted to international football in 1992 after three decades of isolation.

South Africa won nine matches, drew six and lost six since Parreira assumed control in February last year with compatriot Jairo Leal and South African Pitso Mosimane his assistants.

Victory over in-form Paraguay came soon after South Africa made a lacklustre first round exit from the African Nations Cup in Ghana following draws with Angola and Senegal and a heavy loss to Tunisia.

Bafana Bafana are guaranteed a place at the first World Cup to be staged in Africa as hosts, but must compete in the 2010 qualifiers because they double as elimination matches for the African Nations Cup in Angola the same year.

The first fixture is away to bogey team Nigeria on May 31 followed by Equatorial Guinea (home) and Sierra Leone (away and home) on the following three weekends.

Local media reports have linked a number of high profile coaches with the 225,000-dollar-a-month post, including Brazilian Luiz Scolari and Swede Sven Goran Eriksson, whose son helps coach a South African Premiership club.

The contract of Scolari with Portugal ends after the Euro 2008 tournament in Austria and Switzerland while former England manager Eriksson has visited South Africa several times since taking over Manchester City.

Some reports suggest Parreira wants 1998 and 2002 World Cup qualifiers South Africa to hire another Brazilian with club coaches Joel Santana of Flamengo and Abel Braga of Internacional mentioned.

South Africa are ranked 13 in Africa and 69 in the world by international governing body FIFA, whose president Sepp Blatter expressed concern at the poor form of the team before they met Paraguay.

Price of Ronaldinho may be too high for Milan

AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani said Monday the club's bid to lure Ronaldinho to Italy was far from being a done deal

Following Milan's 5-1 thrashing of Reggina on Sunday, Galliani claimed that Milan had failed to agree a fee for Ronaldinho with his Spanish club Barcelona.

The news comes just over a week after Galliani said that were Ronaldinho to move from the Catalan giants, it would be to Milan.

“I don't know if a deal will be done,” said Galliani. “We have to operate within the framework of market conditions. If it happens, great, if not we'll change our objectives.”

Milan's offer is believed to be well below Barca's valuation of Ronaldinho and other teams, such as Chelsea and Inter Milan, possibly interested in the former double world player of the year may be able to offer more money.

While Milan have close contacts with Ronaldinho's brother and agent Roberto de Assis, they seemingly are not on quite such good terms with the Spanish giants.

“I've never said we are close to Barcelona. It's one thing to be close to Ronaldinho, quite another to be close to the club,” added Galliani.

“There are other teams as well as Inter that are interested in Ronaldinho. I've been dipping into the market for many years and there's nothing strange here.

“If Barcelona accept our offer we'll do a deal, if not we won't.”

It's not just Milan being priced out of a deal for the Brazilian, though, as Inter president Massimo Moratti admitted he too found Barcelona's demands too high.

“Ronaldinho is also expensive for us,” he said. “He's expensive for everyone.”

Galliani also admitted he was hoping for a slip-up from Fiorentina in the race for Champions League football next season.

La Viola have a four-point lead on Milan with four games to play.

“We believe in ourselves, the only way to qualify for the Champions League is to win all our matches, but a lot depends on Fiorentina,” he said.

Beckham makes presence felt in Galaxy´s football draw

Landon Donovan took full advantage of precise passes from teammate David Beckham to score a brace of second-half goals in the Los Angeles Galaxy's 2-2 draw with Houston in a Major League Soccer contest.

Thanks to the Beckham-Donovan combination, the Galaxy were able to overcome two one-goal deficits and emerge with the draw on Saturday.

Los Angeles trailed 2-1 late in the game when Beckham fired a crisp cross to a sliding Donovan, who fired into the open side of the goal in the 84th minute. It was Donovan's fifth goal of the young season.

Donovan had knotted the score at 1-1 in the 67th minute with a diving header off a perfect cross from Beckham, the England midfielder who arrived in the States to great fanfare last year.

Hindered by injury last season, Beckham is now playing his first full campaign for the Galaxy.

Brad Davis and Franco Caraccio both scored for the Dynamo, the two-time defending MLS Cup winners who have now notched three straight draws but are the only MLS team yet to post a win this season.

Davis scored his first goal of the season in the 36th minute after striking.

After Donovan equalize, Caraccio gave Houston a 2-1 lead with his second goal of the season. Caraccio knocked in a rebound after Brian Ching's attempt hit the crossbar.

Edson Buddle nearly gave the Galaxy the victory in the closing moments, but Houston's Patrick Ianni headed the ball off the line.

Singapore to use electronic flag displays

sábado, 19 de abril de 2008

As well as making history as Formula One racing’s first-ever night race, the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix will also mark the introduction of electronic flag displays to the sport. The new technology, developed by lighting consultants Valerio Maioli S.p.A for the Singapore event, will be used in conjunction with the traditional flag signals waved by marshals.

The innovative system, which meets the FIA’s stringent requirements, is the result of more than a decade of development at the Barcelona, Imola and Monza racing circuits. Similar to units used to guide pilots at the runways of major airports, these ‘DigiFlags’ will convey the different flag colours in a more visible way during the night race.

Thirty five display panels will be situated around the Singapore track, each controlled by handheld panels operated by officials at each marshals’ post. In addition to improved visibility, the new system will also provide the race director with an overview of every flag display around the circuit, thereby ensuring the more efficient communication of warnings.

With less than six months to go before the inaugural Singapore event takes place on September 28, the race organisers have been hard work preparing the new street circuit. A week-long demonstration of the lighting system was held from March 29, with a 64-metre stretch lit up with 16 projectors, ahead of its complete installation in August.

South Africa to decide on Parreira future Monday

The future of South Africa coach Carlos Alberto Parreira will be decided on Monday, the national football association said.
A weekend report in a Brazilian newspaper quoted his wife saying the World Cup-winning coach would resign because he wanted to help her recover from major surgery and be with his family.

Parreira took over the national team of the 2010 World Cup hosts 15 months ago, charged with building a squad capable of at least reaching the knockout phase of the quadrennial tournament.

South Africa were slow to transform under Parreira, losing a number of friendlies and being eliminated in the first round of the 2008 African Nations Cup in Ghana without winning a match.

But the Brazilian was hailed after a 3-0 friendly triumph over Paraguay near Pretoria last month with the 1996 African champions giving their best performance for several years.

Ronaldo confident Man Utd won´t roll over at Rovers

In-form Manchester United striker Cristiano Ronaldo has no fears the Premier League leaders will see their quest for back-to-back titles derailed at Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park on Saturday.

Second-placed Chelsea closed to within two points of United, for whom the Rovers match is now a game in hand, after a 1-0 away to Everton on Thursday.

It was a morale-boosting victory for Avram Grant’s side after the shock of their 1-1 draw at home to lowly Wigan on Monday.

United’s game against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on April 26 could yet prove pivotal in deciding the destination of the title but Ronaldo, who has scored a remarkable 38 goals already this season, believes his side’s mental strength means they won’t squander their advantage.

“We are in a good position now,” said the Portugal winger, whose performances this season have also helped United into the semi-finals of the Champions League.

“When Chelsea dropped points after we won against Arsenal, it was fantastic for us.

“Blackburn will be a tough game, but if we win we have a good chance to win the title,” added Ronaldo, who has scored in his last seven games.

“There are only four games left and there is a lot of pressure, but my confidence is high.”

While United’s current squad continue to go from strength to strength, reported target Karim Benzema is unlikely to be moving to Old Trafford after the end of the season.

The Lyon striker’s agent, Karim Djaziri, has insisted the 20-year-old prospect is staying with the French outfit.

“Benzema is not going to leave Lyon,” Djaziri said. “I know there is interest from a lot of clubs, but he is still young and he wants to continue in this team to get more experience.

“Next season he will continue to play for Lyon. After that, we’ll see.”

Former Manchester United striker and current Blackburn boss Mark Hughes will hope to temporarily derail his old side’s title bid.

Despite United having won eight of their last nine matches, Hughes is determined his team will play to their full potential.

“We are all looking forward to it, it is a standout fixture not only for us but most clubs,” he said. “It was sold out weeks ago and
that hasn’t happened on too many occasions in my time here as manager.

“It is going to be a great occasion, a great day and we are looking forward to it. We expect to give a good account of ourselves and we will see what happens.”

Rovers currently sit ninth in the Premier League and even though his team are struggling to qualify for the Intertoto Cup, Hughes believes that a top-10 finish is impressive for a club of Blackburn’s size.

“We view the season at this point as a successful season because we work on different levels and with different resources to all the clubs around us.

“We are still in that top-half. We have not been outside the top 10 all year and for a club such as ourselves that is a fantastic achievement in itself.

“But we would much prefer at the end of the season we had something tangible to show everyone, and that’s European qualification if we can get it.”

Josh Kerr flies & Smith bows out at Quiksilver Pro Durban

sexta-feira, 18 de abril de 2008

- - Durban – Some big airs and bigger upsets were the order of the day at the Quiksilver Pro Durban, as New Pier produced funnelling little high-performance waves for day 8 of Durban’s Six-Star Prime WQS event.

The conditions, while perfect in shape and conditions, were a little bit small, but good to excellent rides punctuated the day’s performances and there were plenty of excellent scores being inked by the judges. But first up, the upsets.

Travis Logie was eliminated in the round of 48 in a heat that suffered from a bit of a wave drought, and it was Masatoshi Ohno from Japan and Leigh Sedley from Australia who advanced. Despite Travis catching a last good-looking wave on the final horn and smacking it for all it was worth, he fell just short of the required score and was eliminated, along with fellow South African Damien Fahrenfort.

Parreira set to quit South Africa job: Brazilian press

Carlos Alberto Parreira is set to resign as coach of 2010 World Cup hosts South Africa, Brazilian press reported on Friday, and help his wife recover from major surgery.

Leila Parreira told Brazilian daily newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo her husband had decided to return home 15 months into a contract due to expire only after the quadrennial international football showcase is staged in Africa for the first time.

“I cannot comment on this report until further notice,” Parreira told AFP in Johannesburg.

South African Football Association spokesman Raymond Hack said: “I have no comment to make now but will speak on the issue next week.”

But a close friend of the 65-year-old Brazilian, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Parreira is quitting because he misses his family desperately and spends a fortune phoning them.

Parreira dashed to Brazil in February when his wife underwent undisclosed surgery and she told Folha her husband intends leaving South Africa next month.

“He has already made his decision and is set to return to Brazil at the beginning of next month,” she said of her husband.

After a slow start with Bafana Bafana (The Boys), Parreira was hailed last month when South Africa thrashed Paraguay 3-0 near Pretoria in a friendly.

South Africa are only 71st in FIFA's world rankings.

Parreira guided his homeland to the World Cup title in 1994 and has coached a number of other national teams, including helping Kuwait and Saudi Arabia qualify for World Cup finals.

Messi hopes Ronaldinho will stay at Barca

Barcelona's Argentine striker Lionel Messi said Thursday he hopes Ronaldinho, who is being courted by AC Milan, will remain at the club next year.

“At Barca, we want everyone to remain at the club. If he goes, I will be sad,” he said.

“He has helped me a lot to integrate into the team. Any team would like to have him. I still hope that he will stay.”

AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani said on Sunday that the reigning European champions have come to an agreement with Ronaldinho over a possible summer transfer.

Former twice world player of the year Ronaldinho has fallen out with Barcelona this season as a dip in form and frequent off-field indiscretions have seen the love affair between club and player come to a bitter end after five years.

He is currently sidelined with a leg injury that could keep him out of Barcelona's run-in, where they are chasing La Liga and Champions League glory.

Messi had been sidelined since tearing a muscle in his left leg on March 5 but returned to action on Saturday in a 2-2 draw with Recreativo Huelva, coming on as substitute on 64 minutes.

The Argentine said he hoped to spend longer on the pitch on Saturday against Espanyol, in order to be fit to face Manchester United in the Champions League semi-final next Wednesday.

Team Monster Energy Iron Horse Set For Sea Otter

quarta-feira, 16 de abril de 2008

This coming weekend sees the unofficial season opener for the North American mountain bike race season, and Team Monster Energy Iron Horse will be in attendance yet again, but this year with a new line up.

20 year old Brendan Fairclough (UK) joins 4 time World Champion Sam Hill (AUS), to form an all male line up contesting the full World Cup series as well as other key events throughout the season.

The team will get into Monterey Tuesday night and be on site from Wednesday, stretching legs on a XC ride after the long haul flights from London and Perth. Both riders will compete in the Downhill and Dual Slalom, and use the events as an opportunity to check out the 2008 bikes and set-up in race conditions. The event is mainly used by the team to launch the new gear, rider clothing and of course to interact with the fans. The actual Downhill race is not high on the list of target races for the season, but a good opportunity for early season press images and to put on a show for the race fans.

Ronaldo fed up with speculation over future

Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo says he is angry at all the speculation over his future insisting on Wednesday that he wants to stay at Old Trafford

The Portugal international has scored 37 goals this season and that dazzling form has prompted links with some of United's leading European rivals.

But the 23-year-old told The Sun newspaper that he wasn't planning a move away from Manchester any time soon.

“I just don't care what the whole world seems to want to say about me or speculate about my future.

“I've said it a thousand times and, by now, people should realise…I'm totally happy at United,” he told the tabloid.

“I'm in the form of my life and I'm having the season of my career so far so it makes me mad sometimes to read some of the things which are supposed to be related to my future.

“I get angry but I'm trying to accept it's a waste of energy to be furious because it is not worth it.”

Romario: End of an era

RIO DE JANEIRO, Apr 15 (SW) - Brazilian star striker Romario has officially announced his retirement. The end of an era, in which the player achieved things many can only dream of. Here is a short overview.
Romario de Souza Faria was born in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro on January 29th, 1966. At nineteen years of age, 'o Baixinho - the short one', joined Vasco da Gama in his home town. This club would continue to be of great influence in his career.

In 1988, Romario decided to join then European champions PSV Eindhoven from the Netherlands. He soon gained popularity at the Dutch club and scored no less than 98 goals in 109 matches.

Life wasn't easy for Romario in the Netherlands though, struggling particularly with the cold weather and often appearing wearing gloves and long socks.

After a two-year stint at FC Barcelona, where Romario continued to score more than regularly, he would spend the next year switching back and forth from Flamengo to Valencia.

In following years, the forward would also play for Vasco, Fluminense, Al-Sadd, again Fluminense, again Vasco, Miami FC and Adelaide United, before playing a final six matches for the club where it all started. Vasco da Gama.

Romario won many trophies during his long club career, but his biggest triumph may have been in 1994. Forming part of Brazil's World Cup squad, he was one of the key players in the team's way to the final victory. Romario also scored one of Brazil's penalties in the deciding shoot-out with Italy in the final.

In 2007, Romario's name continued to dominate media worldwide as the then 41 year old headed for his 1,000th goal, something only achieved by fellow countryman Pel鮼br /> While sources disagree on what exactly is Romario's 1,000th goal, the player himself claims that a converted spotkick against Sport Recife on May 20th, while playing for Vasco, was the one that took the player to four digits.

Initially, the idea was that Romario would retire after scoring that goal. However, he went on to become Vasco's player-manager in October, 2007.

In March, the final decision was made and Romario announced that his 23-year-long career would now - really - come to an end.

Andy Roddick beats Paul-Henri Mathieu to send US past France and into Davis Cup semis

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP)—Andy Roddick proved dominant again in the Davis Cup, sending the defending champion United States past France on Sunday and into the semifinals against Spain.

Behind a blistering serve, Roddick defeated Paul Henri 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 for the deciding victory in the best-of-five quarterfinal. This was Roddick’s second singles victory in three days.

A day after a loss by the No. 1 doubles team of Bob and Mike Bryan kept France’s hopes alive, Roddick was never threatened in giving the Americans an insurmountable 3-1 lead. While he was held to 17 aces, he lost only 13 points on his serve to improve to 10-0 in clinching situations for the U.S.

“I think everyone makes a big deal about the 10-0 thing,” Roddick said. “I have to be up 2-1 in order to clinch, so I’ve been put in good positions a lot of times.”

Roddick wrapped up the sixth straight Davis Cup victory for the U.S., including last year’s win over Russia in the final, with an ace down the middle. He then made a lap around the court with the American flag and his teammates.

NBA Stars Speak in One Voice for New Playoffs Campaign

sábado, 12 de abril de 2008

The NBA Playoffs are almost here and once again, the league has an ambitious marketing plan to make sure you know how important the next two months are. The series of 20-plus commercials, running throughout the playoffs, expand on this season’s “Where Amazing Happens” advertising theme and share the tag "There Can Only Be One." They feature split-screens of star players from opposing teams talking in unison about what the playoffs mean to them. The first two, already airing, pair Kobe Bryant of the Lakers and his old pal Shaquille, now with the Suns, and Lebron James of the Cavaliers and Kevin Garnett of the Celtics. On Sunday a third spot, with Crhis Paul (Hornets) and Dwight Howard (Magic), premieres. “We’re gonna win, yeah” they say simultaneously. “That’s not me bragging. That’s me believing. That’s me believing in myself and my teammates. And trust me, you ask anyone who’s ever won a ring, anyone who’s ever been a champion, they believe, too. We’re not here to lose.

Once the playoffs begin, the commercials will be tailored to specific match-ups. They are directed by the Oscar-nominated husband and wife team of Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris (Little Miss Sunshine). They worked with ad agency Goodby Silverstein and Partners to film dozens of players — including Steve Nash, Jason Kidd, Dirk Nowitzki, Tony Parker and Tracy McGrady — for 130 possible combinations. For the first time, all of the NBA's TV partners (ABC/ESPN and TNT) are running the same campaign.

Ronaldinho agreement with Milan: report

ROME (AFP) - A report in Saturday's Gazzetta dello Sport claimed that Brazil forward Ronaldinho has reached an agreement with Milan on a possible summer transfer.
The former twice world player of the year has fallen out with Barcelona this season as a dip in form and frequent off-field indiscretions have seen the love affair between club and player come to a bitter end after five years.

He is currently sidelined with a leg injury that could keep him out of Barcelona's run-in, where they are chasing La Liga and Champions League glory.

But according to Gazzetta: "Ronaldinho to Milan: the ball is in Barcelona's court."

The daily sports newspaper quoted Ronaldinho's agent and brother Roberto de Assis as claiming that only a fee needs to be agreed with Barca to make the move a reality.

"Basically, Ronaldinho and Milan have come to an agreement," he said before insisting that it was not yet a done deal.

"Milan are a great team, Ronaldinho was impressed with his first contact with them.

"The important thing is that he will be happy. When will a deal be finalised? You have to be patient."

Gazzetta claims that the a deal worth eight million euros a year to the Brazilian until 2012 has been agreed while suggesting Barcelona would be willing to do business for a sale of 30 million euros.

However, it also claims that Milan don't want to spend that kind of money, looking to spend only 16 million euros, and that higher bids could come in from Inter Milan (25 million euros) and Manchester City (40 million euros).

Gazzetta also speculates about a major transfer merry-go-round this summer, particularly involving Italian and Spanish clubs as they try to catch up with their English counterparts, who have dominated in the Champions League this season.

In eight matches between English and Italian sides this season in Europe's premier competition, Italians lost six times while drawing the other two and winning none.

Strikers seem to top the list of wanted players, according to Gazzetta, with Chelsea's Didier Drogba linked to Inter Milan, Palermo's Brazilian Amauri interesting Juventus and Genoa's Marco Borriello a reported target for Milan.

It also claims Real Madrid want Roma's Mirko Vucinic and Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo while Barcelona are after Arsenal's Emmanuel Adebayor, Valencia's David Villa and Stuttgart's Mario Gomez.

Brazil's Juninho finished at Sydney FC, reports

SYDNEY (AFP) - Financial pressures have squeezed former Brazilian international Juninho out of Australian A-League club Sydney FC, reports said Saturday.

Juninho, 35, who played 50 times for his country from 1995 to 2003 and was the first Brazilian national team player to play in Australia on a full-time basis, had an injury-plagued season, making just 15 appearances for Sydney.

But Juninho's time looked up when the club signed Socceroo striker John Aloisi and three other well-credentialled A-League players, Simon Colosimo, Mark Bridge and Stuart Musialik for next season.

Sydney FC coach John Kosmina has confirmed that a deal to keep Juninho was dead.

"It's done and dusted and there are no longer any plans for him to play for us anymore," Kosmina told Sydney's Daily Telegraph.

"Obviously, the marquee position wasn't available so we put an offer to him that would've put him inside the salary cap, but we couldn't come to terms and it's time to move on.

"We tried to keep him, we put a proposal to him that was not unattractive but it wasn't marquee status financially."

Juninho's manager Leo Karis said a new contract was briefly discussed but it went no further.

"For a brief moment there appeared to be genuine interest in retaining his services but at no time was a formal offer put to us," Karis said.

Barcelona coach denies rift with Ronaldinho

MADRID (AFP) - Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard on Tuesday moved to quash speculation about a rift between the club and an injured Ronaldinho which will reportedly see the Brazilian star leave the Spanish club at the end of the season.

"Its a pity that he is not able to join us due to injury. A pity not only for the Champions League but also for the league. As for his future, I can't predict the future but I think he still has a contract with Barcelona," he told a news conference.

Ronaldinho, a former FIFA World Player of the Year, is under contract with Barcelona until 2010.

He has been plagued by injury and fitness problems this season that have made it his worst since joining Barcelona from Paris Saint-Germain in 2003, leading to reports that the Catalan club are looking to offload the player at the end of the season.

He has been plagued by injury and fitness problems this season that have made it his worst since joining Barcelona from Paris Saint-Germain in 2003, leading to reports that the Catalan club are looking to offload the player at the end of the season.

The Brazilian international started only 13 of the club's 30 league games this season.

Barcelona can progress to the Champions League semi-finals on Wednesday if they avoid a defeat to Schalke 04 at home.

The club beat the German side 1-0 in Gelsenkirchen last Tuesday to take the advantage in their quarter-final clash.

"We're on the right track although we have to play an important match tomorrow against a good team," said Rijkaard.

"We have to be ready to face up to a Schalke side that will certainly be striving for a more direct game to get the result they need," he added.

Barcelona head into the match having been held 0-0 at home by Getafe on Sunday. The result left the club in third palce, seven points behind league leaders Real Madrid.

Championship near for PSV after win over Heracles

EINDHOVEN, Apr 6 (SW) - PSV Eindhoven are another step closer to winning their fourth consecutive Dutch championship, having beaten Heracles Almelo 2-0 on Sunday.
A powerful distance shot from Belgian captain Timmy Simons put PSV ahead in the 12th minute and Peruvian striker Jefferson Farfᮠdecided the game at ten minutes from the end.

The win would have secured the championship for PSV, had Ajax not won their home match over De Graafschap.

But three goals from Klaas Jan Huntelaar and one from Kenneth Perez left the visiting side, who did score through Tarvaj䲶i, without a chance.

With only two matches to go in the Eredivisie, PSV have a five-points lead over Ajax. Third-placed NAC Breda are now out of the title race, despite an away win at FC Groningen.

That win will be celebrated however, as NAC's chances of participating in the Champions League play-offs have increased significantly. The 1-2 win was earned by goals from Ammi and Amoah, while Lovr頳cored the only goal for Groningen.

Feyenoord did what they were supposed to do and continue to share the fifth place with Heerenveen, albeit with a worse goal record.

The Rotterdam-based side beat FC Utrecht 3-1 thanks to goals from Bruins, Landzaat and Sahin. George did something back for Utrecht but it was too late.

AZ Alkmaar just barely managed to take three points from their game at VVV in Venlo. A goal from Ari and two from El Hamdaoui were enough to secure a 2-3 win.

All matches began with a minute of silence due to the passing away of Dutch FA (KNVB) president Jeu Sprengers. The former UEFA treasurer died at the age of 69.

Massa heads Ferrari one-two to revive title hopes

Felipe Massa needed a win in Bahrain, and all weekend he looked like a man who had come to get it. When the red lights went out at the start, he lit off from the front row of the grid, and that was all she wrote as he dominated in style for Ferrari.

Felipe Massa needed a win in Bahrain, and all weekend he looked like a man who had come to get it. When the red lights went out at the start, he lit off from the front row of the grid, and that was all she wrote as he dominated in style for Ferrari.

The start also set the pattern for McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton. He was very slow away, and ended the opening lap in 10th place. Then he clobbered the back of Fernando Alonso’s Renault, and the resultant pit stop for a new nose put him into a cycle of running a heavy fuel load in traffic for the rest of a frustrating afternoon in which he took only 13th place and lost his world championship points lead.

In Ferrari’s wake, BMW Sauber showed that they had the speed to beat McLaren, Nick Heidfeld pushing hard after his team mate to take fourth place, having set fastest lap at one stage before Heikki Kovalainen annexed it during an undramatic drive to fifth in a McLaren that simply wasn’t fast enough.

Toyota’s Jarno Trulli grabbed sixth and held on to it comfortably from Red Bull’s Mark Webber and Williams’ Nico Rosberg, who completed the points scorers.

Alonso survived his brush with Hamilton to take 10th place, unable to stay with ninth-placed Timo Glock in the second Toyota, and by the finish he had a hungry Rubens Barrichello breathing down his neck in the Honda. The Brazilian had earlier fought with and beaten fast-starting Giancarlo Fisichella, who took 12th ahead of Hamilton for Force India.

Kazuki Nakajima was a lacklustre 14th for Williams, ahead of Toro Rosso’s Sebastien Bourdais and the battling Super Aguri teamsters Anthony Davidson and Takuma Sato. David Coulthard was delayed in an early incident and finished 18th for Red Bull, ahead of Adrian Sutil in the second Force India.

Toro Rosso’s Sebastian Vettel retired on the first lap with a mechanical problem following a bump from behind, while Jenson Button’s hopes were dashed by the need for a pit stop for damage repair at the end of the opening lap, and another after a passing move on Coulthard went drastically wrong.

The other non-finisher was Nelson Piquet, whose Renault succumbed to mechanical problems.

The result puts Raikkonen into the lead of the world championship for drivers with 19 points, ahead of Heidfeld on 16, Hamilton, Kubica and Kovalainen on 14, and Massa on 10. In the constructors’ chase, BMW Sauber lead with 30, ahead of Ferrari on 29 and McLaren on 28.

Practice two - Ferrari in command as Hamilton crashes

sexta-feira, 4 de abril de 2008

Ferrari’s Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen continued to head practice in Bahrain on Friday afternoon, as the day came to a dramatic halt for Lewis Hamilton.

The Englishman lost control of his McLaren on the exit to Turn Seven, the fast chicane, with 10 minutes left to run, and though he caught the ensuing slide and held it, he ran out of room and his MP4-23 struck a barrier heavily enough to loosen two wheels and cause considerable damage. He was unhurt.

As if to rub salt in the wound, Raikkonen then banged in a new fastest lap of the session moments later, at 1m 32.327s. Massa, who had been quickest since deposing Hamilton early on, looked like dropping to second but then made a low-fuel run for the best lap of the day in 1m 31.420s.

Heikki Kovalainen vaulted up to third with 1m 32.752s just before team mate Hamilton crashed, the latter’s once-quickest time of 1m 32.847s leaving him fourth.

Behind them, Robert Kubica kept BMW Sauber close to McLaren with 1m 32.915s, and Nico Rosberg maintained his form with sixth place and 1m 33.022s for Williams. With Kazuki Nakajima in eighth with 1m 33.098s, there was an air of quiet satisfaction in the English team.

David Coulthard gave Red Bull continued cheer with seventh place on 1m 33.048s, but Mark Webber was on a different programme and was 13th on 1m 33.782s.

Between them, Toro Rosso’s Sebastien Bourdais (1m 33.197s), Renault’s Nelson Piquet (1m 33.247s), Honda’s Jenson Button (1m 33.710s) and Renault’s Fernando Alonso (1m 33.755s) chased Nakajima. Alonso created some further excitement in the dying moments as he and Adrian Sutil came together in Turn One as Alonso dived down the inside, almost losing it in the process, and the Force India driver didn’t see the Renault as he turned in.

Toyota focused on race work, as Jarno Trulli headed Timo Glock in 14th and 15th places (1m 33.822s and 1m 33.856s respectively). Then came Honda’s Rubens Barrichello (1m 33.966s), BMW Sauber’s Nick Heidfeld (1m 34.023s), Force India’s Giancarlo Fisichella (1m 34.388s), Toro Rosso’s Sebastian Vettel, Sutil (1m 34.405s) and the Super Aguris of Takuma Sato and Anthony Davidson (1m 35.288s and 1m 35.712s respectively).

Hobbling Ronaldinho out for six weeks

MADRID, April 4, 2008 (AFP) - Barcelona's Brazilian forward Ronaldinho will be sidelined for about six weeks after he pulled a muscle in his right leg during a training session, the Spanish club said Friday.

The injury means the 28-year-old, who has has been linked to a move away from the Catalan giants, will miss most of the remaining season which has eight rounds left.

"During Thursday's training session the player unfortunately suffered a hamstring strain in his right leg," the club said in a statement.

"A scan carried out confirms that he has a torn muscle which will keep him off the pitch for a period of about six weeks."

The former FIFA World Player of the Year has missed Barcelona's last four Spanish league matches and only returned to training with the rest of his teammates on Wednesday.

Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard said Ronaldinho had been absent because he had complained of muscle pains in his right leg.

But a report from the Catalan club's medical staff, published on March 17 on Barcelona's website, said scans found he had "neither a tendon nor muscular injury".

Spanish media has reported that Rijkaard has grown tired of the player's frequent late nights out and was not counting on him for the rest of the season.

Ronaldinho, who is under contract with Barcelona until 2010, has had his worst season since he joined the Catalan side from Paris Saint-Germain in 2003.

The Brazilian international has been plagued by injury and fitness problems and has started only 13 of the club's 30 league games so far this season.

Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport published photos on Thursday of his brother and agent Roberto Assis at a Milan restaurant with AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani which fuelled speculation that the player will join the Italian club.

English Premiership sidea Chelsea and Manchester United have also been touted as a possible destination for the player at the end of the season.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has denied there is a "divorce" between the club and the player, who helped the Catalan side win the Champions League in 2006 and the Spanish league title in 2005 and 2006.

The buy-out clause attached to Ronaldinho's contract is 125 million euros (194 million dollars).

But his agent is reportedly prepared to invoke a FIFA transfer clause that allows a player to end his contract after three years at a club tat would allow him to leave for a fraction of this cost.

Barcelona lie in third place in the Spanish league with 58 points, seven behind defending champions and leaders Real Madrid.

Without Ronaldinho, Barcelona on Tuesday defeated Schalke 1-0 in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals. The final of the European football's showpiece tournament is scheduled for May 21.

Beckham scores first MLS goal for Galaxy

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - England midfielder David Beckham scored his first goal in Major League Soccer play on Thursday and contributed to another as the Los Angeles Galaxy defeated the San Jose Earthquakes 2-0.

Beckham arrived in the MLS to great fanfare last season but played little due to injuries.

He had scored once before for the Galaxy, on a direct free kick last August 15 against MLS rivals DC United in the SuperLiga tournament featuring MLS and Mexican clubs.

Landon Donovan also scored for the Galaxy, as they spoiled the Earthquakes' return to the US league after a two-year absence.

Since then the San Jose franchise had been moved to Houston and rechristened the Dynamo, leaving the California city without a club until the creation of the new Quakes.

Galaxy stars Beckham and Donovan made sure San Jose's return to the league was not a winning one.

The English superstar collected a pass from Donovan outside the penalty area and slipped the ball past goalkeeper Joe Cannon to open the scoring in the eighth minute.

Beckham returned the favor for Donovan in the 37th minute, flicking the ball with his right foot to his hard-charging teammate.

Donovan lofted a shot over a rapidly-closing Cannon to put the Galaxy up 2-0.

"Obviously I always enjoy scoring. Usually I'm on the other end where I'm assisting," Beckham said. "Tonight was one of those nights where I scored. I'm happy, but I'm more happy with the team's performance."

The Galaxy notched their first victory under the guidance of new coach Ruud Gullit. They had been beaten 4-0 by the Colorado Rapids in their MLS season-opener on Saturday.

"In the first game, we were all over the place, from the back to the midfield to up front," Beckham said. "That's something that we've worked on the last two or three days. It showed tonight. It showed that we worked hard on it."

Beckham said he felt completely fit, a big change from last season when he arrived in the United States battling injury after a demanding Spanish League season.

"Last year, I was probably 50 percent fit when I started," he said. "I was playing in games I shouldn't have been and it just sort of went downhill from there. I feel great after two games and my England game, so I'm ready to get on with it."

Beckham also noted that his arrival after the MLS season had begun last year also hindered his ability to contribute, as did the hoopla that surrounded his arrival.

"It's important from my part and the team's that (I'm) here from the beginning," Beckham said. "Last year, there was a lot of distractions and I think I suffered from that - and also the team.

"I'm happy to be through the preseason and ready to play. Last year, I wasn't even training and I was playing. It wasn't good. That's not right to do, and I won't do it again."

UEFA Cup Quarter Finals

LEVERKUSEN, Apr 3 (SW) - Zenit St. Petersburg is the biggest winner of the first leg in the UEFA Cup quarter finals, while PSV, Getafe and Sporting all achieved potentially valuable away draws.
Earlier on the day, Bayer were downgraded to no more than average when their Russian visitors pushed them aside 1-4 with goals from Arshavin, Pogrebnyak, Anjoekov and Denisov. The only German goal came from Kieszling.

PSV Eindhoven visited Fiorentina and conceded a goal from Adrian Mutu in the 56th minute. Striker Danny Koevermans levelled seven minutes later however, and the Dutch side are now in a good position for the return leg.

PSV will have to do without Farfᮠnext week though, as the Peruvian collected a late yellow card and is now suspended. Whether goalkeeper G󭥳 is available for the next game remains to be seen. The Brazilian had to come off injured in the second half.

Bayern Munich thought to have everything under control against underdogs Getafe when Luca Toni opened the score in the 25th minute, but Romanian Cosmin Contra surprised the host by equalizing near the final whistle.

No goals were scored at Ibrox Stadium, where Glasgow Rangers hosted Sporting Lisbon. Anything will be possible next week in the Portuguese capital.

Stuttgart slap 50 million euro price tag on Gomez

quarta-feira, 2 de abril de 2008

BERLIN (AFP) - Germany striker Mario Gomez now has a 50 million euros (78 million US dollars) price tag as VfB Stuttgart bosses show their determination to keep their hot-shot who is set to star at Euro 2008.
The 22-year-old is under contract until June 2012, but both Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid have expressed an interest and the defending Bundesliga champions want to keep their goal-machine for as long as possible.

It would be a new Bundesliga record if either Spanish side pays such a high fee for Gomez and the 50 million figure is more than triple his 16 million market value at the start of the season.

"One cannot insure the market value of Mario, we feel he is worth about 50 million euros," said Stuttgart's director of sport Jochen Schneider.

Gomez, who will miss the next two weeks with a thigh injury, has bagged 15 goals in 20 league games even though Stuttgart have laboured this season with erratic form.

With six goals for Germany in just nine appearances, Gomez is set to partner Bayern Munich striker Miroslav Klose up front in the national side for June's Euro 2008 tournament.

"If I were Real's coach, I would want to sign him. But his favourite Spanish team is Barcelona - and Real are the arch-enemy," VfB coach Armin Veh told German magazine Sport Bild.

"The plan is that Mario wil stay with us for another years, that time is extremely important for his development."

Stuttgart captain Fernando Meira says there is little chance of Gomez remaining at the club for too much longer.

"It makes everyone proud at the club that we have such a good player as Mario in the side," Meira told local paper the Stuttgarter Nachrichten.

"Sooner or later, Mario will join a big club, probably Real Madrid or Barcelona."

Gomez has said he wants to spend another season at Stuttgart, but admitted he is tempted by the prospect of life in Spain's La Liga.

"I would like to play abroad in the future and Barcelona is my dream team," said Gomez, whose father is Spanish.

"But at the moment, I have no plans to go and even if a top team comes in for me there is no guarantee I will leave."

Gomez will have to sit out this weekend's Bundesliga game against title rivals Hamburg and Bayer Leverkusen the following week, having been blighted by injury last season, the striker is impatient.

"It cannot be changed. I want to be fit again as soon as possible, but I have to be patient and wait," said Gomez, after tearing his thigh muscle against Hanover last weekend.
